Professor Vale studies how technological innovation in healthcare reshapes morality, expertise, and inequality.

Mira Vale is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Washington University in St. Louis. Using ethnographic and mixed qualitative methods, her work spans three streams of research: (1) the construction of ethics for digital health technologies; (2) algorithmic decision-making in organizational contexts; and (3) the role of information technology in standardizing healthcare practices. Her research has been published in Social Science & MedicineSocius, and the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, among other venues, and has received awards from multiple sections of the American Sociological Association. Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and the Institute for Citizens and Scholars.
