This course will examine how racial inequality operates within America's juvenile legal system and its impact on the experiences of African American children and youth. Students will use conceptual understandings of race and racialization to investigate the history of America's juvenile legal system and its transformation over time. Students will also engage the implications of punitive criminal legal policies during the post-Civil Rights era for African American children, their families, schools, and communities. Finally, this course will highlight strategies of resistance by African Americans to transform America's juvenile legal institutions and policies.
